Finmere Landfill Facility

I understand that in recent weeks the odour from the Finmere landfill has become particularly strong again. This is extremely disappointing given efforts by the Environment Agency and the operator to cap cells and manage the landfill more responsibly. 

I write to provide an update on Finmere landfill.

As you are aware we issued an Enforcement Notice on the operator of the site in October 2021. The Notice included a range of steps intended to help address non-compliance with the Environmental Permit, including malodour.

I have received the following update from the Environment Agency regarding the operator's progress in addressing issues of non-compliance:

Last month, it was brought to my attention that Opes MRF 2013 Ltd had been sold and an entirely new management team brought in.

Today I visited Finmere after receiving a number of reports that the odour at the Landfill Facility has been particularly strong in recent weeks.

I was very disappointed to hear that the odour at the Finmere Landfill Facility has been particularly bad in recent days, especially in the evenings. Following an increase in reports to the Environment Agency, I have been told the following:
